Trong thời kì đâu của thế chiến thứ hai nó đã phục vụ cho phe trục , đặc biệt là trong việc phòng vệ chống lại cuộc đổ bộ của Đồng Minh lên Dakar; và sau đó trong cuối cuộc chiến có hoạt động cùng với phe Đồng Minh tại Ấn Độ Dương trong giai đoạn 1944-1945. Điều khiến chiếc thiết giáp hạm này trở nên đặt biệt đó khi nó là chiếc thiết giáp hạm đã từng phục vụ cho cả hai phe trong chiến tranh thế giới thứ hai. Richelieu đã tham gia vào việc chuyển quân đội Pháp trở lại Đông Dương vào cuối năm 1945, và phục vụ cho đến những năm 1960.
