From UK so I don’t know if this covers other countries but I was able to get a SoftBank sim from Mobal before I left for Japan. I think there was limited payment plans but saves this initial stress :)

I got a sim (still have it) when I was visiting there. No address needed. I paid about $30/month for unlimited data and calls

You don’t need to have an bank account for an address especially if you’re on a working holiday. You can just go to city hall and give up your adres from your sharehouse or apartment. (1/2)
