Kristi Noem, a staunch loyalist once viewed as a possible 2024 running mate, as the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, according to multiple reports. Noem, who has served as South Dakota governor since 2019 and previously was the state's at-large member of the U.S. House, is the latest immigration hardliner to be chosen to join his administration. As homeland security secretary, Noem will lead the sprawling department that oversees border and immigration enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Transportation Security Administration and the U.S. Secret Service, among other public safety agencies. With more than 230,000 employees and around a $60 billion budget, DHS is the third-largest Cabinet department in the U.S. government. If she is confirmed by the Senate, Noem will play a key role in Trump's pledges to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and deport millions of undocumented immigrants. While she does not represent a border state, Noem has been vocal on immigration issues, calling the situation at the southern border an "invasion." As governor, she deployed South Dakota's National Guard troops to help secure the southern border. She has also been banned from Native American reservations in South Dakota after suggesting tribal leaders benefit from Mexican drug cartels. Noem, the first woman to serve as South Dakota's governor, garnered national attention for refusing to implement COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
