You think making $100k is going to make you rich, but even though it could it likely won't, and that's because most people make this serious mistake. Meet Mara. Mara just got a promotion and salary increase, and now she's making $100k a year, after tax $72k, which is $6k a month. You think making $100k is going to make you rich, but even though it could it likely won't, and that's because most people make this serious mistake. Meet Mara. Mara just got a promotion and salary increase, and now she's making $100k a year, after tax $72k, which is $6k a month. Since Mara's making more money now, she gets a bigger apartment in a nicer area, she's paying $2,500 a month. Mara believes successful people drive nice cars, so now that she's making 6 figures, she upgrades her car. She's paying $900/mth for her car loan. She ends up upgrading her life across the board: new gym membership for $300 a month, starts eating out more and at "nicer restaurants" for $700 a month, shops at the high end grocery store for $500 a month, buys nicer clothes fit her new lifestyle at $500 a month, starts getting bi weekly facials, nails done, monthly hair appointments and other beauty services to the tune of $500 a month, and because she's been spending more time out doing things she's paying more for parking and taking more Ubers, costing her another $200 a month. Mara's lifestyle is costing her $6,100 a month, meaning on a $100k salary she's not only living paycheck to paycheck, but she's going into debt by $100 a month. Her spending doesn't account for any saving or investing or repayment of debt. When something happens - her car breaks down, her cat needs to go to the vet, she gets asked to be a bridesmaid at her friends wedding, even though she's making good money, she'll go into debt to handle it. Because she's not investing, she'll never be able to stop working, and there will always be a limit to how much wealth and stability she can have in her life. Even though she's making 6 figures, someone making less but investing even just a couple hundred dollars a month will light-years ahead financially - if they start in their 20s it could easily lock in their millionaire status. So while Mara thinks she's giving herself "the wealthy life she deserves", she's actually robbing herself of a truly wealthy life in the future. Mara's mistake is that she forgot to pay her future self first, and by doing this she'll lock in a future where she always has to work for money - and by spending everything she makes each month, she'll always be paycheck to paycheck no matter how much she brings in. More money doesn't solve your problems unless you learn how money works.
