@malcolm.gladwell: The famous Terman study followed children with genius-level IQs over decades and found a striking result: those from wealthy families thrived, while many from poor backgrounds struggled. Even extraordinary intelligence can’t overcome the powerful constraints of poverty. Revenge of the Tipping Point has arrived. Order now. Link in bio! #malcolmgladwell #genius
It’s not about rich people having books in the home, it’s about influence and access to resources and influential people, opportunities, and having the path paved for you so you only have to walk it.

It can be hard to fit in with that IQ. And without social capital it can be harder to move up. Wealth is not only money but also social capital.

This is me. IQ of 144 (measured numerous times over my life) yet born into a home that couldn't afford groceries or rent. Life of challenges and adversity. 🥺

It’s almost if it’s not the individual’s fault for not living up to potential, but it’s society’s failure to not value the gift of their potential. It’s only suprising that isn’t obvious, huh?

My son has a genius IQ. He struggles to make deep connections with peers. He finds social connections with "older" people to be richer and more fulfilling.

Funny because an example Elon Musk, truly genius level and I assumed he made it big because of that. Turned out his father was extremely wealthy, which no doubt helps when you are starting up.

I told a friend that someone could be a great violinist but if they don’t have a violin, they won’t be able to play. She said then they will show their genius in another way. 🙄 But what if they don’t

Social class is an obvious factor but I also think emotional IQ plays a big part in how well we do in life.

Poverty is catalyst. But more importantly is Self Perception. People who become successful have success perception of themselves. Unsuccessful geniuses have a negative perception of themselves

I’d be curious if the study delved into how IQ factored into success at ALL income levels. I.E. how do people in the lower quartile of poverty with a high IQ compare to others in the same income range but with a lower IQ? Do this comparison for all income levels (how many times you want to slice it … but at least four quartiles). My hypothesis is that you WOULD show differences based on IQ. If so, the conclusion would be more nuanced … income levels would probably still be the most important indicator of future success but IQ would demonstrate as a factor as well.

When you can only afford the $20 boots, you wind up buying them 10x more than the person who can afford the $100 boots. Poor people spend more money on alot of things because they can't afford quality

Good Will Hunting. Poverty is a synonym for lack of nurturing in many cases. In the sense that basic survival supercedes any upper level needs. There is no room to explore beyond today.
