Miami-Dade is shutting down its license plate reader program after Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered the removal of Flock Safety cameras from Florida state roads. The technology has helped law enforcement locate missing people, respond to Amber Alerts and track down suspects, but state officials cited concerns over misuse, privacy and surveillance. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the cameras will be taken offline while stressing that public safety and constitutional rights must both be protected. Some local officials and law enforcement leaders are pushing back, warning that eliminating the cameras could make it harder to solve crimes and identify suspects and witnesses.
