Tobio from We Did It (Bokutachi ga Yarimashita) is a character whose story explores guilt, escapism, friendship, and the consequences of trying to run away from one’s actions. Unlike characters driven by grand ambitions or a clear sense of purpose, Tobio begins as an ordinary teenager who wants little more than to enjoy his youth, spend time with his friends, and avoid taking life too seriously. His carefree attitude reflects his desire to remain comfortable within the familiar world he has built for himself, but that sense of normality is shattered when one reckless decision changes the course of his life. Tobio’s defining flaw is his tendency to prioritize immediate gratification over thinking about the consequences of his actions. He wants to enjoy life without having to take responsibility for anything beyond the present. This becomes especially apparent after the incident, when the reality of what he and his friends have done begins to catch up with him. His initial instinct is to escape, hoping that distance will somehow allow him to return to the person he was before. However, the further he runs, the more difficult it becomes to separate himself from his actions. One of the most interesting aspects of Tobio is the contradiction between his desire to be happy and his inability to believe he deserves that happiness. He wants to experience love, friendship, and an ordinary future, but his guilt constantly interferes with his ability to accept those things. His relationship with Renko particularly highlights this conflict. She represents the possibility of returning to a normal life, someone with whom he can imagine a future beyond the events that have consumed him. Yet Tobio struggles to accept that possibility because he knows that the life he wants cannot erase the consequences of what he has done. Tobio’s story also challenges the distinction between being a good person and doing something terrible. He is not introduced as an inherently cruel individual, nor is he someone who fully understands the weight of his decisions. He is an ordinary teenager whose immaturity, anger, and desire for an uncomplicated life lead him into circumstances far beyond what he can handle. However, being ordinary does not absolve him of responsibility. His humanity is precisely what makes his story uncomfortable: he can feel remorse, want to change, and genuinely wish for happiness while still having to acknowledge the suffering his actions caused. Tobio Masubuchi’s character centers on guilt, escapism, and the consequences of one’s choices. He represents the uncomfortable reality that people can make irreversible mistakes without necessarily being monsters, and that remorse does not automatically undo the harm they have caused. His story explores the conflict between wanting to move forward and knowing that the past cannot simply be left behind. Ultimately, Tobio is a character who wants to live an ordinary, happy life but must confront the fact that wanting happiness and believing oneself worthy of it are two very different things. #real #slideshow #tobio #WeDidIt #foureverdespised
