@fascinatedbyfungi: This chonky button is the #BootedKnight or #Tricholomafocale, found here amongst the dune in Oregon, it tends to fruit in fall/winter under conifers (especially pine). Similar to Matsutake it has a dense fibrous meaty texture but the aroma is like mealy urinal cakes and the mushroom itself is unpalatable/inedible. The cap stains red with KOH. . I picked one to identify and take pictures with, so I decided to demonstrate the texture by cutting it up. These are extremely common and I’m just mimicking the behavior of animals that assist mushrooms in spreading their spores. Some people even theorize that picking Tricholoma may help stimulate the growth of more fruiting bodies.
