@gladdddys: my thoughts on this 💭 & i know that sometimes yes, kids know what’s going on and they just choose not to do it, but a lot of the times frustration/defiance = confusion imo ##teachersoftiktok##genz##highschool##studentmotivation##apathy

They’re also hyper aware of what is and isn’t relevant to real adult life. When I started connecting assignments to real skills I use as an adult, it was like a switch flipped& they were ON IT

The amount of times I would break down when I was a student and completely checked out when a teacher would say “you should know this already”. Mind you I was an A/B student and did really well in

I’m in 10th now, but this is why I stopped caring. In 8th grade honors English, our teacher taught tone and mood wrong, gave only verbal instructions that changed daily, then graded us with a completely different rubric. All our work was online except the 3-page handwritten essays she didn’t even read 😑and she couldn’t work her computer, so she put in zeros as placeholders. Me and her argued multiple times a week because I wasn’t about to fail just because she was incompetent, and she wrote me up for it too. Since middle school, I’ve had exactly one science teacher who could actually teach. Our parents can’t help they don’t even use half the stuff they learned in high school. School doesn’t care if we learn, they just care if we pass, and honestly, some teachers hate kids, are lazy, don’t teach/don't know how , can’t use the tech, and have no business being in a classroom.

I think most teachers are aware of this. The problem is the powers that be (admin/dept of education) don’t care.

So true. The state’s expectations and the actual learning level are vastly different.

I am so transparent with my students and I humanize myself. I'm not perfect so I feel like that makes them more comfortable with me faster and then I teach.

It’s crazy I’m seeing this today bc this light bulb went off for me today. Also the gap between GT/AP - on level- Sped is wider than it’s ever been. Really difficult if you have mixed classes

Most of my kids didn’t even have teachers in middle school and I also feel like NCLB has allowed them to go YEARS without mastering content

1) it’s because some teachers lack encouraging their kids to invigorate themselves and help then understand that pushing yourself is uncomfortable but that is just an exercise to help us understand

As a student, I HATE busy work. I just need the textbook, take notes, and then take the test. I don’t need 8000 worksheets that explain the same thing just in different fonts. I’m not saying to not have assignments, but there comes a point where it’s truly unnecessary. It’s especially bad when a teacher is like research a disease for example, and then assigns a disease for you, instead of letting you pick what you feel most interested in. Let us choose how to express that information we learned, whether it be a paper, poster, PowerPoint, etc. I hate doing posters, I’d rather write an essay, I know people who are the opposite.

What feels impossible is that I teach mixed grades. I have no problem going over information again but my problem is that I have 5 really struggling. 5 miles ahead. 5 kids who don’t care and 5 abseng

I feel like first semester freshmen year I am half computer teacher. They don’t know how to use any tools on docs or slides. It helps to get them over that hurdle so they can write.

I teach middle school music and my kids aren’t picking up reading notes as quickly as I remember when I was their age. Instead of getting mad and blaming them, I started color coding the notes.
