I had to take the core ciriculum at Columbia, proud I can tell the difference between Manet and Monet

I think it’s also about accessibility. Art is accessible to all and having $ doesn’t mean you have taste. Tech bros are in a mindset of exclusivity and a lot of their hobbies reflect that.

Born, raised, and still live in SF. Art and culture has been slowly moving away since the tech industry came. The old rich were patrons of the arts and helped keep the artists and performers here

As a former art kid turned engineer, you’d be surprised how creative tech can be. Some of the most interesting art I’ve seen lately has been from tech people. Maybe it’s time to expand your horizons.

i love that, that consumption and appreciation of art requires you to de-center yourself and these people can’t or don’t want to do that

Because people see art as a means to no money, but the reason we have so many stories and understand our history is art. It can convey emotion and feeling that math function can’t. Art is humanity

I value art a lot, both as an audience member and a creative person. I disagree with this take - I think more people go to college now (which is good), therefore a college degree is not differentiating enough to open great opportunities, so you have to deeply focus on and develop a marketable skill. Art fields and art appreciation are not easily marketable skills, so they become less of a priority.

The metrics! If they can’t measure it, then they can’t conquer/control it so it has less value. What a great point. 💪🏾

It's not for a lack of want, but the current environment is one where in order to be safely housed, fed, and receive medical attention, we must be like this or else we die a slow death

I’m a traditional artist: oil paint, and I actually disagree. While I think everyone should be educated in the arts, the ingenuity used to solve a problem or code a solution is inherently creative.

I find it interesting that the two sports you mentioned are very individualistic. Yes they’re is a conversational aspect and a group setting, but the end goal of both is to improve your time.

Also, new money / old money kids. CS and math unlock tech and higher earning power that were not available from existing old money networks. Old money does arts and humanities - no assembly required

Eschewing traditional arts is not the worst aspect of industrial capitalism as manifested within the tech sphere. I think it’s more about defining excellence as compliance to shareholders.

I think about this constantly. I live in Pittsburgh, I see what Andrew Carnegie did with his power every day. I see his desire to leave something classically beautiful attached to his name…

The answer to the question on screen at the start is collecting art is like old timey bitcoin. It's a store of value and a means of wealth aggregation

That’s the wrong way to look at it, the design and problem solving aspects of tech are as imaginative and creative as any visual art, unless something is interactive why should I stare at it?
