Tippi Degré had a childhood unlike any other. Born to French wildlife photographers Sylvie Robert and Alain Degré, Tippi’s playground was the vast, untamed wilderness of Namibia. Surrounded by wild animals from birth, she formed extraordinary bonds with creatures that most people would consider extremely dangerous. Unlike most children, Tippi’s playmates were wild animals. Her best friend was Abu, a giant African elephant, and she also formed a close bond with a leopard cub named J&B. These animals accepted her as their own, treating her as a member of their family. Living in the wild, Tippi learned to adapt and thrive in one of the world’s toughest environments, the Kalahari Desert. She handled massive pythons with ease, showing a fearless and respectful approach to all creatures. Tippi was born and raised until the age of 10 totally in the wild, with her parents and the animals as her only companions. It was just the three of them living in the wild, with few human interactions. Immersed in the mindset of these animals, Tippi believed they were her size and her friends, using her imagination to navigate these unique conditions. “I speak to them with my mind, or with my heart and soul. And I see that they answer me,” she once said. Tippi shares her thoughts and wisdom on Africa, its people and the animals she has come to know and love in: Tippy my book of Africa.
