you shouldn't be touching that I'm pretty sure that's an offering from some kind of ritual not good to touch once an offering is placed it isn't disturbed or touched anymore

Morteros are still used today, generally ceremonially but sometimes out of necessity. Often times older bedrock mortars are used in lieu of making a new one. So no, not hundreds or thousands of years
