![How does the world look for a baby, swaddled by his bunica in a small village deep in Maramureș? It’s a world colored by flickering light and ancient scents, where smoke from the sobă mingles with the earthy aroma of thick wool. His bunica, hands rough but tender, wraps him in velințe—those heavy, handwoven blankets, dense with the symbols of their land. The cloths are woven not only to warm, but to guard: roses and tulips stitched in vivid red and green, symbols of life’s strength and a wish for blooming health. Spirals in deep indigo and coal-black, woven in to represent the Carpathian mountain paths, are there to protect against the winding unknowns of life. Each layer has its own purpose, its own power. Red for blood and life force, green for the roots that will tether him to the earth, black for resilience in the face of hardship, and blue for the wisdom his people hope he’ll carry. With her hands worn from years of work, bunica pulls the thick, woolly layers tight around him, as if to shield him from every chill, every ill-wind that might blow. Her stitches—the “împunsături”—are not delicate; they are sturdy as the old wood beams overhead, each thrust of the needle a defiance of the bitter Maramureș winter outside. She knows these symbols well, for she learned them from her mother, who learned from hers, and now she stitches these same protections into the cloth that holds her grandson close. Outside, the cold is fierce, howling against the mountain, but here, within these blankets, the baby lies quiet, cocooned in tradition, cradled by generations. His little fingers rest against the thick, coiled roses, the spiraling wolves’ teeth motifs, patterns drawn from forests and fields, from life and land.
