Dear athlete (and parent suffering along with her): There is NOTHING wrong with you. I’m gonna say that ONE MORE TIME for the ones who feel alone and defeated - THERE IS NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU!!! Tumbling IS NOT NATURAL to the human brain or body! It is a HIGHLY SPECIALIZED SET OF SKILLS WE LEARN THROUGH REPETITIOUS BEHAVIOR! Behavior that is normalized within the confines of our practices at our gyms. But outside of that environment, your ability to tumble is seen as a SUPER POWER!!!  So when you have a really great day of tumbling, followed by a really difficult one - don’t worry!!! Ebb and flow is a VERY REAL part of the tumbling journey! Don’t focus on the feeling of it all either - “That felt good, it felt bad; today feels like a good tumbling day, blah, blah, blah! Feelings are misleading because they were designed to remember moments, not dictate progress or set a mood! It doesn’t FEEL right because that’s how you’ve conditioned your brain to interpret the situation - it’s always looking for things to make it not feel right!!! I made this video so that you can witness Ariana’s journey this year. Injured last fall (non-tumbling-related), she developed a severe performance anxiety around her tumbling that would require her to embrace a MOUNTAIN of discomfort in order to outperform! We started that journey in March during a 2-day training session. And you could only imagine my amazement when she sends me these videos earlier this week of her getting back to ALLOWING her skills to flow!!!  We didn’t end our training session with a mind-blowing success story, even though she did perform her skills for the first time in months. But here’s the takeaway - if you’re suffering thru a performance anxiety and your ONLY goal for yourself or your athlete is to “get her skills back”, you’re missing a tremendous opportunity!!!
