One of the strangest things about getting older is realising that while your whole life has changed... To your parents, you’re still their child. You can be married. Have children of your own. Run businesses. Have people depending on you. And your mum will still ask if you’ve eaten. Your dad will still worry whether you got home safely. Things that used to annoy you when you were younger slowly start making sense. The phone calls. The worrying. The constant questions. The advice you never asked for. And then you have children of your own... And suddenly you understand. You understand how someone can worry about another human being more than they worry about themselves. You understand why your parents couldn’t sleep until you came home. Why your mum kept calling. Why your dad wanted to know where you were. It was never about controlling you. Most of the time, it was just love that you weren’t old enough to understand yet. And as I’ve got older, I’ve realised something else. Our parents are getting older too. The people who spent their lives worrying about us will eventually become the people we need to worry about. So answer the phone. Visit them. Sit with them. Be patient when they repeat themselves. And appreciate being someone’s child while you still have the privilege of being able to. Because no matter how old you become... There’s something incredibly special about still having someone in this world who looks at the grown person everyone else sees... and somehow still sees the child they raised.
