Another tip: if you coat the bars in plastidip, it preserves the life of your bars, cuts down on bacteria and is easier to clean. Plus, it’s not slippery for the fowl.

2x2's they need to grab not sit flat footed. They need to lock on at night that's natural for them.

Im having WAY more trouble with bumblefoot since switching to 2x4s, and going back to 3-4" cedar limbs. they have their feet in a more natural position, and can still keep warm. birds roost in trees, not on shelves.

The best thing to do is to give them the option to choose. Give them a 2x4 and also give them a natural stick that varies in thickness along it's lenght and let them choose.

Important tip if you have large fowl such as Cochins or Brahmas. I use a 2x6 and place the roosting bar only 12” from the ground. Any higher risks injury when they “flop” down in the morning.

Why not use 2 x 6. Isnt that better to ensure coverage with room to shift.

My hens still don’t roost at night. Almost 6 months. Located in SoCal. They lay in the bedding. Any tips?

Would be interesting to give them both options, see which they chose.
