Hungry and tired look A LOT alike, especially in younger babies. I work with newborn families all the time who mistakenly think their baby is hungry, when in fact, they needed sleep! This can lead to fussy, gassy babies.🤱 The good news is this – it is EASY to learn how to tell the difference once you know what to look for: 👉️ Think about what your last hour looked like with your newborn. Did they already have a big feeding session and now they are acting fussy? Newborns are only awake 45-60 minutes before they need to sleep. Instead of feeding again, put your baby down for a nap – likely they will sleep longer. 👉️ Crying is a late sign of hunger and of tiredness! Early signs of hunger include: Rooting, sucking on their hands, and moving their head side to side. Early signs of tired include: Red or glazed eyes, pulling at their ear, and the inability to be content unless they are being held. 👉️If you aren’t sure - always offer a feed, and watch your baby closely. If their eyes are open and they are taking big sucks and swallows, they are hungry! If they close their eyes and start flutter sucking… they are tired! I would end the feed and put them down for sleep. I hope this helps! If you would like an extra set of expert eyes to help you, book an in-home or virtual feeding session. As always, I am sending you so much love and support. You are exactly what your baby needs, even on days it doesn’t feel like it ❤️ Newborn life | new mama | breastfeeding journey | short naps | fourth trimester #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmom #breastfeedingsupport #newmama #breastfeedingjourney #yeg #yegmom #edmonton #alberta #edmontonalberta #canada
