When I was an EMT I used to have to do shifts at our town's warming station. The vast majority of people there were elderly who couldn't afford to turn their heat up to a comfortable level for their poor circulation

That’s insane! There are two code blue (above 85ish°f or below 32°f over night) shelters within a mile of me and I’ve never had any problems or disturbance or anything from them!

I love that Utah passed a law for this. I feel they should change it to 40* and below. Cause we all know how cold 40* feels. 18* is just crazy

Where I live, a lot of churches are part of a cold weather shelter network, and members volunteer to supervise all night. You know, like actual community members.

we have a few in my city and they are in different parts of town. all on bus routes. the people don't want to cause trouble they just want a warm.place to sleep.

honestly Im not American so my take might be a bit off here - but people are literally one to four paychecks from being homeless at best (unless you are getting an insane salary) or literally one trip

Glad you’re saying something! I live in Logan and our Episcopalian Church opened a warming center last year and will be opening again this year. It’s right in the middle of downtown Logan.

I can’t even imagine that cold! I was thinking about this on my walk today in San Francisco where it’s 55 today, and feels so cold to me. It’s downright hateful to fight warming centers at 18 degrees

I read that there's a significant amount of people in Utah that do have houses but don't have the ability to supply it with the heat needed when it gets that cold. this is for them too

There was a homeless guy camping out for years at a bus shelter very close to our apartment. Nobody dared to bother him, he wanted to stay there so he was provided for. Didn't cause any issues.
