@fascinatedbyfungi: During the NAMA regional foray up in Washington, I was lucky enough to get to hike around with expert Aaron Hilliard @Aaron (Mushroom Wonderland) and learn about some of the mushrooms in the PNW that I haven’t seen down in California. The temperate rainforests of the PNW are conifer dominated, making the #AngelsWing #Pleurocybellaporrigens a relatively common find. These mushrooms are look-alikes for oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus) because they have a similar shape, appearance, and growth pattern. As Aaron explains in the, the key differences are the lack of a true stem/stipe, the thin tough flesh, and their growth substrate (conifer vs hardwood) - although some oysters can also fruit on conifers, so don’t rely on that as the only difference. . While many older field guides still label these as edible, there have been a significant number of deaths attributed to this mushroom in Japan. Upwards of 18 elderly people (>65) undergoing hemodialysis for kidney disorder died of encephalopathy after consuming this mushroom. In a 2023 paper (Kawagishi et al.), researchers identified pleurocybelline (PC), a Pleurocybella porrigens lectin (PPL), and pleurocybellaziridine (PA) as three toxic compounds capable of causing disease in mice and human cell cultures, inferring that these could be the toxins responsible for the fatalities attributed to this mushroom. .
