@dannylovespasta: Personally I would throw out food past the expiration date, but what do you think about the sell by date, use by date, or best by dates?? I feel like they could simplify this for us.
A lot of things are still good after the expiration date. I go with look, smell, taste

No, if I see something is past the date I cannot eat it or else I get in my head and end up throwing up out of fear of getting sick

depends what it is, but everything is always checked. if all the vibes are still good it'll get used, cant afford to throw everything away

If it doesn't look/smell/taste like it will kill me it's being consumed

Guideline, I look at it, smell it, taste a slight bit and so on. If it passes all the tests I eat it.

expiration date aren't really a thing, it's more so "best by", only expiration you gotta look out for is for meds or baby food
otherwise, trust your nose, tongue and eyes to know if something's edible

If it looks the same, smells the same and tastes the same, it’s good. The "expiration date" is supposed to be a "guaranteed date" for it to be good, doesn’t mean it’s bad after

If it doesn't smell or taste bad it's fine for me (as a poor student)

if it's not stinky, moldy, or discolored, I'm eating it but that's just my rule.

not eggs or anything that you cant visibly tell, ususlly fruit or veg is just too far gone by then anyway but its more of a case by case thing tbh

My reasoning is that the dates are “best before” not “leathal after”. I’ve had opened milk that’s 3 weeks past its date. Look, smell, taste are my decision factors.

Nope. I’m terrible with it too, if I open something and it says use after 3 days of being opened I won’t touch it after four, can’t keep left overs longer then three days either

in Dutch the expiration date is ten minste houdbaar, which means it's at least edible until a certain date. after that you just look at the food itself

go by smell, feel and look for most fresh things, cans are generally okay well past expiration as long as they aren’t misshapen, use by is usually a factor but not THE factor in tossing food for me
