I will forever be a Goosebumps girly 💚 From the moment I saw the books at the @Scholastic UK book fairs, they had my heart. I still regularly read my childhood copies for some spooky excitement and a healthy dose of nostalgia. When I saw that there was a new film from the Goosebumps world, R.L Stein’s Pumpkinhead, I jumped at the chance to immerse myself in some 90s, autumn-hued nostalgia. While not a period film, Pumpkinhead perfectly captures the creepy but fun vibe I loved so much in my childhood. While we in the UK boil to death in this never-ending heatwave, it was sheer bliss to escape to Redhaven for pumpkins and autumn leaves 🎃🍂🍁 The film is a perfect gateway horror for tweens and younger teens, so it’s a shame that it’s rated 15 instead of 12. It’s far darker than I expected and features some really fun practical sfx (shout out to the team for what I assume is a huuuge note of Evil Dead appreciation) and creature design. While not scary, it could deliver some spooks and frights for younger viewers. The plot is fairly predictable for anyone who’s read R.L Stein’s extensive back catalogue, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. It’s beautifully shot, the colour grading gave me the biggest shot of dopamine and the score is wonderful, underpinning all the action and excitement. The cast do a great job especially the town weirdo Rusty, played by Matty Finochio. A local eccentric who lives in the woods will always be one of my favourite horror tropes and Rusty had me laughing out loud throughout the movie. It’s a perfect film to watch for some fun Halloween atmosphere, as we gear up for spooky season. I’ll definitely be rewatching on a cosy Sunday afternoon in October and it’s one I can confidently say my tween would love. Campy, cheesy and nostalgia-filled fun 🎃 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead is available on Digital HD and DVD from 17 August from by Signature Entertainment. Thank you for the screener @Signature 🍿 🧡🎃🧡 #halloween #goosebumps #gatewayhorror #rlstine #horrortok
