We translated Chinese new year greetings into English and progressively got sassier as we tried to out do each other. These are literal translations of some of the blessings we wish upon each other. These aren’t just well wishes, because in Chinese culture, it is believed that what you say in the new year will come true for the rest of the year. So when we greet each other, we will often say things like, “congratulations, you’re rich”! (That’s what gong hei fat choi means!) It’s like speaking goodness into existence. As kids, we would memorize a few of these phrases and go up to adults to rattle off one or two and in return we would get lucky money in red pockets.
