In 2006 a man from Lakeland, Florida, won $30 million in the lottery. Choosing a lump-sum payment, he took home roughly $17 million after taxes, instantly transforming his financial situation. His newfound wealth, however, attracted a flood of attention, with people, some friends, others strangers approaching him for help and loans. Shakespeare, known to be generous, shared and lent large sums of his winnings. In 2008, he met Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore, who presented herself as a friend and financial adviser eager to help him manage his wealth and avoid exploitation by others. Yet Moore had her own scheme in mind. She quickly gained control over his finances, using his money to fund her lifestyle, which included buying luxury cars, trips, and other luxuries. Then, in 2009, Shakespeare vanished. Moore attempted to cover up his absence by telling his family and friends that he had left town to escape the pressures of wealth. She even hired people to send text messages from his phone to create the illusion that he was alive and traveling. Suspicious of his disappearance, Shakespeare’s family reported him missing. Police focused on Moore, discovering her recent control over his finances and her last-known contact with him. Their suspicions were confirmed in January 2010, when Shakespeare’s body was found buried beneath a concrete slab in her backyard. He had been shot and killed. Despite her attempts to deflect blame, Moore was arrested and charged with murder. After a trial that revealed her deceit and greed, she was convicted of first-degree murder in 2012 and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
