Multiple hit point types is fun Basicly one for psychic damage one for exhaustion one for normal dmg (physically harming aka blade, fire, poison etc) one for resistance and so on 👍🏻

For me first half is stamina, then 1/4-1/2hp is light wounds. 0-1/4 is heavy wounds

Back in the 80s we used HP and wound points. Wound points were you Con. Hp as normal. when a weapon hit you lost HP and 1x WP. If you got to zero HP they were carried into WP. when you get to zero

It does make you wonder what healing is doing if you’re missing 30 hp but still above half.

the problem is that you think every hit is lethal, you can imagine a sword hitting armor, damaging the player but not lethally injuring, blocking an arrow, but the force it come with it hurts

Older systems called Hit Points as the ability to avoid lethal damage. ie instead of stabbed through the stomach, the character turned at the last moment and got a minor cut.

I agree but this doesnt actually change the mechanics of the game. Its still damage but the higher the HP means the better they are at avoiding the fatal attack.

The PHB does explain that Hit Points aren't about literal damage you take but how long you last in combat thru whatever means such as dodging, resisting hits, etc. It's why injuries are optional rules

I tend to use a 50/50 approach. Half your HP is your Armor, Half is your Health, so after a certain point, or a high enough damage hit, my narration shifts from how their armor is damaged, to how they

It makes sense how it is. Because it depends on where you are hit. if you are toughened by experience and a lot of battles you are able to survive more cuts of a sword. Nor every hit has to be a

What's interesting is this is how HP is described within the rules. ”Hit points represent a combination of physical and mental durability, the will to live, and luck. Creatures with more hit points1/2

I see a lot of people bring this up, and I'd love for my DMs to implement this, but if you find yourself constantly reflavouring mechanics to couch realism, it may be time to pick up a new TTRPG
