@thenewsmovement: The University of Edinburgh was Tomass’ top choice. But a few weeks into his studies he says he realised it wasn’t the place for him. 40 per cent of Edinburgh’s students come from private schools, and the University has recently issued guidance to students telling them “Don’t be a snob!”, with reference to “clothing and lack of knowledge or regional accents.” Tomass told us he didn’t feel like Edinburgh University could support him as a working-class student, and so he left. When we asked Uni if Edinburgh about it - they said they were sad to hear about Tomass’ experience and that they’re proud of their ‘diverse community’. They told us ‘more than 80 per cent of our entrants from Scotland consistently come from a state school and the proportion of students from Scotland’s most disadvantaged areas has almost doubled since 2015.’ They did admit ‘there is more work to be done [on] our services to support students most effectively.’ #uniofedinburgh #edinburgh #university #Scotland #class #degree #education #engineering #heriotwatt #lifeandstyle
isn't Heriot Watt better for maths anyway? An old schoolmate chose HW in 1988 and he was a maths genius who could've certainly got into Edinburgh Uni back then.

I’m his big sister and just to mention that he was a straight A student top of his class all the way and they still wouldn’t help him. Classism at its finest.

I was at Edinburgh many years ago and the majority were privately educated . But it didn’t bother me I loved being at Edinburgh and my freedom but it’s about time they abolished private schools..

Edinburgh kids should be given first priority for placements far too many places are going to kids from England or overseas

So he’s admitting he was not at an educational/intellectual level to do the degree, but it’s the fault of the students who were that he felt uncomfortable for this? University is independent study.

I live in the new town and we are becoming over run with entitled noisy students from down south. My kids went to a private school but they are well mannered and respectful. I’ve heard about the snobbery and the disrespect to Scottish students, shameful ! When I ask these hoorays to keep the noise down in the wee hours, they are so dismissive, nanny needs to put them to bed with no supper!
