Farms are very valuable yet very unprofitable businesses. I think we've forgotten about the need for food secuirty and the really rich land owners have their assets in trust. It's not worth the grab.

It’s very telling that a lot of people against farmers, would sell land if they inherited it. Rather then look after it, continue to build a business. Pass it on to their kids.

Finally some full on sense … where does rhe money come from to pay IHT , selling land is not the answer as then you’re profit going forward is reduced and probably wouldn’t cover the costs

In Ireland a farm can be transferred to a qualified farmer family member inheritance tax & stamp duty exempt. Agriculture is of high value to the government of Ireland.

They kick up a fuss, but like any other millionaires they can plan for this and place the business and assets in trusts and partnerships and end up not paying any inheritance tax.
