Back in Ottawa today! Following my chat with Craig Norris that aired on CBC Kitchener-Waterloo this morning, I started the day at a press conference with Elizabeth May amplifying our community’s calls to national media – calls that include pushing the governing party to keep their promises, protecting our children's future, and ensuring essentials - like housing - are affordable for folks across our community. More specifically, on affordability, I'm continuing to push to reduce costs by not only ending incentives for large corporate investors who are raising rents on previously affordable housing, but by doubling down on my calls to rapidly increase and sustain affordable housing investments. This includes introducing a new motion later this fall to fix the criteria for federal affordable housing funding - which currently allows for the vast majority of this money to go to units that aren’t truly affordable! I’m excited to share more about this soon. I'm also continuing my advocacy to address the price gouging of Big Oil, whose pure profit increased by over 18 cents per liter in recent years. We can easily implement a windfall tax on their record profits - generating $4.2 billion - every dollar of which can go to the affordability solutions our community needs, like improved service and reduced fares on public transit. Finally, I'm pushing to address the strain on community resources, like housing and employment, that has been worsened by exponential increases in temporary residents - while protecting these residents from exploitation. I continue to advocate for the federal government to adopt the remaining six measures in my motion on international students (full motion in the linktree below), continuing to call for more equitable funding for the arts, and for the government to fix the Canada Disability Benefit. It’s good to be back, equipped with all the stories and perspectives I heard all across our community all summer! #kitchenerontario #cndpoli #houseofcommonscanada #houseofcommons #housingcrisis
