@1kevinmu: 🧳 POV: You're a guest of William Randolph Hearst 🏰 Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, was built for publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst to the designs of Julia Morgan between 1919-1947. 🏕️ Hearst, who had grown up camping on the site of Hearst Castle, more formally known as La Cuesta Encantada ("The Enchanted Hill" in Spanish), had initially asked Morgan to design him "something a little more comfortable up on the hill" as he felt that he was getting too old to continue to stay in tents when visiting. 🤯 The house, which incorporates architectural elements acquired throughout Europe, eventually grew to over 90,000 square feet, with 42 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, and 3 guest houses! 👑 While Hearst was married to his wife Millicent throughout his occupancy of Hearst Castle, it was his mistress, vaudeville actress Marion Davies, who was the chatelaine of the castle, as Millicent went back to New York after only spending a single Christmas at the main house (Casa Grande) in 1925. 🌟 Hearst and Marion hosted numerous members of the Hollywood and political elite of the day at Hearst Castle, including Calvin Coolidge, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. 🍸 Guests were generally left to their own devices during the day, partaking in riding, shooting, swimming, golf, croquet and/or tennis. The only absolute deadline was for cocktails in the assembly room at 7:30 on Saturday night, though alcohol was rationed: guests were not permitted to have liquor in their rooms and were limited to one cocktail each before dinner. 🎟️ After Hearst's death, his family donated the castle to the state of California and it has been open to the public since 1958. 📽️ For a house owned by a man who owned a film studio, whose mistress was a film actress, and who hosted numerous Hollywood stars, Hearst Castle itself has ironically almost never been featured in film, as Hearst banned filming at the house during his lifetime and commercial filming is still rarely allowed. Since 1957 only 2 projects have been granted permission. Do you recognize the house from either of these projects? #hearstcastle #juliamorgan #sansimeon #visitcalifornia #housemuseum
