@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling the “poor performer”👇 It can be frustrating as a manager when it’s hard to get to the bottom of poor performance. When we display frustration in an unproductive way it disrupts safety in the relationship dynamic which will make it even harder to get to the bottom of things. Instead I would recommend the following: ▶️ Make sure they know you want to be supportive and see their potential ▶️ Let them know you need their help. This creates shared responsibility which is exactly the dynamic you ideally want to create. “I really need your help as I’m not sure how best to support as I’m mindful the solutions I’ve offered so far haven’t helped” ▶️ Rather than putting them on the spot ask them to have a think about what support they think would help. “Can you have a think overnight what help you think you need and bring some suggestions to your one to one tomorrow so we can come up with a plan together?” 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this? Share your experiences in the comments so we can learn from each other 😊 📌 Please be mindful that the perspective offered in this video is generalised and won’t fit every situation so please follow your instincts about whether this applies to your situation. my default is asking them to teach me how to do it. it helps to demonstrate their understanding of the task and gives me an opportunity to see where the gap is.

They are not realistic portrayals of how most workplaces operate...staff have to be able to carry out their role to an agreed upon level. You can't hand hold repeatedly...its perform or exit.😳

The worst advice for the new managers is to spent more time with their “poor performance” reports rather than supporting high performance. Just give them 2-3 chances with a sincere effort, then fire.

what can I do when it's my manager that refuses to learn and makes constant mistakes, which in turn reflects poorly on the team?

my comment on this would be asking someone to think overnight leaves room for more worry and anxiety from the employee pov....

Having conversations while you’re not in an emotional state was one of the best things I learned as a leader.

I think when it comes to managing people there is an aspect of shared responsibility, but if you’ve discussed issues multiple times, retrained and offered help what else can you do?

As an IC, these are strangely helpful so I can empathize with my manager and “get inside her head” before these conversations even happen

I really need managers to learn when it’s time to just cut your losses. I would bet 99% of the time the person is lazy or just dumb. Making it way harder for the rest of us. Just fire them!!!!

Nah. Someone who’s making the same mistakes after being reviewed twice and a habit, they need to be told it’s not okay. Going too easy on people is what leads to this.

This is just a nicer version of the same repeated conversation, some people aren’t cut out for some jobs. You need to either find tools to help them do better or help find them another role that better suits them.
