The Secret Service on Friday acknowledged multiple operational and communications “failures” in the runup to the attempted assassination of former President Trump at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “This was a failure on the part of the United States Secret Service,” Ronald Rowe, the acting director of the agency, said in a press conference. “It is important that we hold ourselves to account for the failures of July 13 and we take the lessons learned to make sure that we do not have another mission failure like this again.” Mr. Rowe said the Secret Service did not give clear guidance or direction to its local law enforcement partners and that there were “communication deficiencies” between law enforcement personnel at the site. The agency did not collocate its security room with local law enforcement and there was an overreliance on mobile devices that resulted in information being siloed. The acting director also said there were failures in the advance work by the agency, including acknowledging line-of-site issues but not properly mitigating them. “While some members of the advance team were very diligent, there was complacency on the part of others that led to a breach of security protocols,” he said. Mr. Rowe, who took over the agency on July 23 following the resignation of Kimberly Cheatle, said that personnel would be held accountable for the lapses. “The mission assurance review has identified deficiencies in the advance planning and its implementation by Security Service personnel,” he said. “These employees will be held accountable, and this agency has among the most robust stable of penalties in the entirety of the federal government.” #usss #secretservice #butlerpa #cspan
