They missed us because they were looking for boys. They had no idea what it looked like in us girls. And still- now - it persists.

I realized this when I was seeing a 30y/o autistic man whose parents paid for his 2/2 townhome and he worked very part time and insisted that autism was only for him

I always tell people that 99% of the time, you can (and should) learn more about autism. My parents thought they knew about autism, their son was autistic of course they did, but they didn’t notice their daughter was for 15 years.

This is SO interesting!! I was hyperlexic as a kid and tested as “reading at a college level” in 4th grade. Diagnosed with autism at 21y/o via a research study 🤦🏼♀️it all makes sense now

My mom worked with kids with autism and she STILL refuses to believe it. I think because I'm not rocking in the corner muttering about trains 😒

FYI the same goes for food allergies and learning disabilities. You need the money and to be assertive with doctors or providers to get a diagnosis.

Facts. We were lower middle class white. My brother was coddled and “troubled” I was “gifted”. Now I’m 30 and have to relearn everything. He’s a user and has been through rehab multiple times.

sometimes even the rich schools would hide the diagnosis from the kid if they were high-masking, but still provide extra services. that way colleges and future employers wouldn't know either.

Coming from white, fairly well-to-do parents… I was missed and not included or diagnosed bc that wouldn’t fit into their “perfect family” Christmas card motif 🥺

I grew up in the 6 figures+ and all I wanna say is that richer does not mean we got seen, because my family got my brother tested for whatever but not me, because his behavior was disruptive.Woohoo 🙄

My parents admitted that they chose to not have me tested. Because of money and the stigma behind the diagnosis.

That really hit me hard a couple years ago. EVERYONE knew apparently. I thought I was normal and just people didn't like me and no one wanted to be my friend. No. They all knew I was "special"

I’m from a long line of generational poverty and dyslexia etc and they had a name for us, “not college bound” they shuffled us into the workforce and most of us enlisted, went to prison, or toiled.
