Can vegan athletes get enough protein? A group of researchers sought to find out. They recently published 3 modelling studies looking at the calorie and protein needs of bodybuilders, professional American football players, and rugby players (I discussed the bodybuilder study in a prior video). They estimated the calorie needs of these athletes from previously published studies, which ranged from about 4200 to over 6000 calories per day. That probably sounds like a lot, but that’s in the ballpark of what these massive athletes consume! They then looked at the dietary intake of the vegans in the Adventist Health Study-2 and scaled it up to the calorie needs of the athletes, since they would eat far more food. In doing so, the athletes would, on average, exceed the total protein target of 1.6g/kg/day for strength athletes and hit the ideal targets for leucine intake, which is the primary amino acid responsible for triggering muscle protein synthesis. Plus, this is WITHOUT regular consumption of protein supplements, which would only make it even easier. So yes, it is possible to meet protein needs, even with these high protein targets, on a vegan diet.
