Travis is a man of routine, working long hours as a taxi driver to combat his insomnia and loneliness. His apartment is sparse and impersonal, reflecting his isolation. He keeps a journal, documenting his observations of the city's underbelly, filled with judgmental and often disturbing thoughts. His appearance is simple and functional: short, neatly combed hair, plain shirts, and a military jacket, hinting at his past. Haunted by his wartime experiences, Travis is unable to reintegrate into civilian life. He is deeply troubled by the violence and moral decay he sees around him. This leads to a growing sense of anger and a desire to cleanse the city of its perceived corruption. His attempts to connect with others are awkward and often fail, highlighting his social ineptitude and emotional distance. Travis becomes infatuated with Betsy, a volunteer working for a presidential candidate. He idealizes her as a symbol of purity and goodness, but his inability to understand social cues and his increasingly erratic behavior lead to their disastrous date and eventual rejection. This rejection fuels his growing sense of despair and reinforces his belief that he is an outsider. Driven by a need to act, Travis attempts to assassinate the presidential candidate, seeing it as a way to eliminate corruption. When that fails, he redirects his attention to Iris, a 12-year-old prostitute he encounters while driving his taxi. He becomes obsessed with rescuing her from her pimp, Sport, and the abusive environment she is trapped in. In a climactic and violent confrontation, Travis confronts Sport and his associates, resulting in a bloody shootout. Despite being severely wounded, he manages to free Iris and is hailed as a hero by the media. The ending leaves Travis's fate ambiguous, suggesting that his internal struggles are far from resolved. Travis Bickle is a deeply troubled and complex character, whose experiences and worldview lead him down a path of violence and self-destruction. He represents the alienation and moral decay of urban society, as well as the psychological scars of war.
