In 2023 we moved to a new home out in the country. Being by a lake and off dirt roads, my husband and I assumed they used sand on the roads during the wintertime. They do, but as we learned the hard way, they also use rock salt… I was filming Winston enjoying the first snowfall at our new home when Winston let me know something was wrong. He only made it a couple hundred feet off our driveway before I saw him lay down and start to lick his paws. It was in that moment that I knew I had made a mistake by letting him off our driveway without boots. I directed him into the snow to walk off the salt but ultimately had to carry him home. From the time I noticed him lay down to the time he was off the road was less than 10 seconds. He didn’t suffer any salt burns but many dogs that walk on salted roads and sidewalks for extended periods do. I share this for awareness as I continue to see a lot of dog owners unknowingly walk their dogs in these conditions without paw protection despite their pups showing signs of obvious discomfort. Today, Winston doesn’t step foot off our driveway when it’s snowing without his Air Pup boots.
