What mercy for the lovers who strive to conceal The secret of love—when passion always gives it away. In these verses, the soul becomes a restless traveller that finds peace only in union. Meeting the beloved is imagined as fragrance, refreshment, and repose. Love remains a secret that lovers try to conceal, yet longing inevitably exposes it. Shihab al-Din Yahya ibn Habash al-Suhrawardi, known as al-Suhrawardi al-Maqtul—“the slain Suhrawardi”—was a philosopher, mystic, and poet best known as the founder of the Illuminationist philosophy, a spiritual vision in which light symbolises knowledge and truth. Born in Suhraward, he travelled through the intellectual centres of the eastern Islamic world, studying jurisprudence, philosophy, and logic. He later settled in Aleppo, where his thought attracted both admiration and controversy. His bold ideas and symbolic language provoked strong opposition, and he was killed in 587 AH / 1191 CE, earning the epithet al-Maqtul. His most famous work is The Philosophy of Illumination, a foundational text of Islamic mystical philosophy.
