@radagast09: Replying to @dexteradams1128 I've had my horses on dirt lots and limestone lots and I'll take the limestone any day, even though it's extra work to set up! #horsetok #homesteading #horsebarn #drylot
We do wood chips, it’s so so so much cheaper and works pretty good. You have to refresh it every couple of months but it does a great job

We use limestone screenings for dry lot and arena. Cheap and doesn’t was away in heavy rain like sand

Would you be able to share what price/ton is in your area? We really want to do this but want an idea on cost before diving into inquiries

how deep is the limestone screening? what's the base under it? I'm trying to figure out what to do for my 'dry' lots

we did the same thing! It was so worth it, the paddock is so easy to pick, we never have to worry about mud, and the horses can run around all day long without risking slipping in the mud!

Do you have to put a base layer down or did you just drop the limestone?

I never knew about limestone screening! This may be a game changer for me here in Michigan! My round pen turns to a muddy mess every year and the sand has to be redone!

Do you know how it is for arena footing?? Does it blow away in wind?? I have an arena that I want to add footing to as I’m not happy with what we currently have.

Does it get very hard when it dries? I have been debating footing for my horses and never heard of this!

Did you do French drains or what did you put under it?

If you can afford it, getting someone with a grader to put a very slight slope on it makes a huge difference

I just did a 20’x60’ screenings pad in front of my run in for this reason! They are out 24/7 (no stalls) so the only place they had to get out of the mud is the shelter until now.

I love limestone. It also maintains the hooves well which means less frequent farrier trimmings

İ’ve tried everything as we live in a flood area. Their hooves got abcsesses from mud. We now mix limestone with sand and İ’ve been happy with how fast it absorbs. We have to renew it yearly.

Contact Carthage Mills and ask for a distributor near you that sells their Geogrids. They are great for mud management.

worst part of mud for me isn’t them being dirty, it’s having to schlepp back and forth without falling or getting stuck 😭 bonus points for horses that knock you over
