READ 👉🏻👉🏽👉🏿 I recently preached for my good friend @philipamitchell at @2819church in Atlanta—a church that’s predominantly Black. Before I went, someone asked if I was nervous to preach at a “Black” church. Honestly, I’m always nervous to preach because I have a fear of the Lord, but never because of the racial makeup of a room. But that question got me thinking about how we still view churches by race. Phillip’s church is mostly Black, and @netcastchurch is mostly White. And while both of us lead multiethnic congregations, filled with people of different races, nationalities, and backgrounds worshiping Jesus together….Dr. King’s words still ring true: Sunday is often the most segregated hour in America. Ephesians reminds us that the gospel has broken down walls of hostility, and as believers, we’re called to live that out. I’m not naïve—I understand why churches look the way they do. Phillip’s church is in Atlanta; mine is on the North Shore of Boston. We serve different communities and cultures. But we’ve continued to push for unity and diversity in our churches and not settle for homogeny simply because it’s easy. Pastor @loritts once told me, “Proximity breeds empathy; distance breeds suspicion.” Those words hit home. Growing up in NJ where I was often the only White kid on a basketball team, or in my friend groups; I learned firsthand the value of diversity—not just in the neighborhood, but at my dinner table. And that’s what I long to see more of in the church. My hope is that, as my friends and I labor in ministry, we also intentionally set the stage for the next generation to do even better. That we pass on churches that reflect God’s kingdom—a kingdom that’s multiethnic, reconciled, and unified in Christ, pushing toward a day when no one asks if we’re nervous to preach in a church that “looks different.” 🤜🏼🤛🏿 On Earth as it is in Heaven‼️ - #kingdom #racialreconciliation #diversity #multiethnic #Jesus #church
