@packleaderdogs: Instinctually, dogs do NOT want disorder in their pack/family, which includes cats living in the home. Here, you will see a cat go out of his way to attack the boy who accidently stepped on his tail. The dog instinctually moves in and immediately sends the cat away to diffuse the situation. There is a BIG difference between protection and possession. Many of my clients who have unstable dogs will tell me how "protective" their dog is of them, even to other members of the family inside the home. That is not protection. It is possession. The human has failed to provide leadership, and the dog has now claimed the human as one of its resources. Dogs without leadership will commonly claim people in the home who they see as weak and provide other resources like food, excessive affection, access to furniture, and their own intimate space. Check out the video before this to see this in action. Why would humans create this? Most are not thinking about the dog's need to have a calm and confident leader/ parent figure. Instead, they are focused on their own emotional needs to feel significant. They create a story that their dog is "very protective of me because he loves me so much." In reality, the dog is just guarding a human they see as a possession of theirs. Constantly being in the space of the human isn't love. It's anxiously keeping tabs on their resource that they see as weak and can easily be claimed. Dogs who are stable and have a calm/confident leader/parent-figure are not possessive, but they will 100% be protective of all members of their pack/family. My dogs are super friendly with all people. However, if you try to break into my home or attack my wife, my son, or myself, be prepared to feel the wrath of a German Shepherd and an American Bulldog (with a cavapoo talking shit in the bathroom😂). Huge difference between protection and possession.
