@themegandaily: Happy Evacuation Day to all who celebrate! For those just learning…Evacuation Day USED to be the biggest holiday in November for New Yorkers! After the American Revolution, it was ordered that all the British (and their loyalists) had to leave NYC by 1pm, November 25, 1783. While they obliged, not all the British were happy about it, so here is how one trickster tried to get the last laugh with a flag switcheroo! Did you know about this little secret bit of NYC history? Oh and of course…because when we talk about Americans and Thanksgiving, we also must acknowledge the indigenous people of America, whose history is honored in the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian just a block away from Evacuation Day Plaza… I bet more people go to touch the anatomically correct bull than enter the FREE museum honoring the beautiful culture of America’s indigenous peoples. #nychistory #newyorkhistory #secretnyc #mysecretnyc #LearnOnTikTok #DidYouKnow #didyouknowfacts #americanhistory #thanksgiving #manhattan #nyc #newyork #newyorkcity #newyorkcitylife #newyorkcityblogger #nyctour #nyctours #nycguide #tiktokhumanitiescampaign

We have some amazing history in NYC. I feel like it’s not promoted enough. Boston does this really well with the Freedom Trail. Our Revolutionary War history in NYC should really stand out much more.

But the stars and stripes was not the official flag at that time, in fact, there was none. Check your history books, ma'am. Might have been any number if different styles of patriot flags then in use.

Go about a block and a half north and on your left you’ll see a plaque commemorating the pole climb and the gent’s name. I think it’s opposite Wall St.

Boston celebrate its own ‘Evacuation Day’ still when we kicked the troops out of the city, it also happens to be Saint Patrick’s Day too.
