I tell my mom all the time with experiences "we were in the same place but we weren't having the same experience."

I think it’s the difference of “how can I live my faith” vs “how do I make others live my faith”

Yes. 🙌 being taught for my masters degree by very educated doctoral professors made me MORE liberal but I’m sure it made some of my classmates more conservative.

I went in to a Baptist university a conservative-ish Christian & came out a VERY progressive liberal agnostic nurse 😂 the theology classes I took absolutely were instrumental in that

I think this is called Cognitive Dissonance Theory. When faced with that type of conflict you drop or strengthen beliefs to resolve it.

Breenan Lee Mulligan said something to the effect of personality predates ideaology. and I think that personality also effects how you interpret these lessons

Same thing happened at my ultra Reformed Presbyterian college. My dad asked me what happened and I’m like “we learned about the Bible?”

I deconstructed as a teen, so on the outside looking in, it seems like those who went liberal believe in the actual story of jesus, and those who went conservative believe in the control of the church

There’s a sound going that’s Rhett from gmm saying “your kids aren’t leaving the church because you didn’t teach them well enough but because they actually paid attention” or something to that affect.

I think it's bc some ppl go into ministry from a place of empathy but others it's from a place of looking for power and that is what makes the difference

My dad didn’t want me to go to a Bible college because he said it would make me a liberal. As a deeply conservative teen I was confused and hurt that he thought that. Now… I think he saw the signs…

Maybe it’s the horizontal and vertical morality thing?

I have met very few people in my life... if any honestly... who I think have changed. Absolutely everyone I've ever known goes into experiences that amplify them in different ways.

When I told my ultra religious grandma that I was going to study Theology she sighed that I was going to lose my faith lol I didn’t but yes I totally saw this! I was always pretty moderate though.

KC have you heard of horizontal vs vertical morality systems? I wonder if that could be at play here at all. Doesn’t seem like it necessarily, but both are fascinating.

I feel this. I went to a more progressive Baptist seminary and this happened there too. It’s fascinating.

I think if you studied the youth of these people you might find additional insight. Also, I am curious if evolution has created individualistic vs collectivist adaptations over time.

This happens with child being raised in the same households. This is the beauty of being your own person. Everyone does not receive information the same way.

I went a conservative Baptist college. saw the same thing. left the religion bc of that disparity. I still appreciate the value when studied academically

I grew up a church kid from a very moderate Baptist church (to the point other Baptist churches narrowness shocked me,) and studying theology made me MUCH more liberal.
