Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended the Biden administration's decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan in 2021 as he testified Wednesday on Capitol Hill for perhaps his last time as secretary. The withdrawal led to a chaotic evacuation as Taliban forces rapidly seized control of the country, with 13 U.S. service members and some 200 civilians being killed during a terrorist attack on Kabul's airport. The secretary argued the administration was left in a tough spot after President Trump negotiated a deal with the Taliban before leaving office that he said left U.S. troops vulnerable to attack.
"To the extent President Biden faced a choice, it was between ending the war or escalating it," he told lawmakers. "Had he not followed through on his predecessor's commitment, attacks on our forces and allies would have resumed and the Taliban's assault on the country's major cities would have commenced." Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), the committee's chair, accused the Biden administration of being ill-prepared and ignoring repeated warnings from American officials and allies about the risks of removing U.S. troops. "This catastrophic event was the beginning of a failed foreign policy that lit the world on fire," Rep. McCaul said, urging the secretary to take "accountability for the disastrous withdrawal." Secretary Blinken said even the U.S. government's "most pessimistic" assessments did not anticipate the Afghan government and its security forces would collapse so rapidly as he defended his decision to keep the U.S. embassy in Kabul open until two weeks before American troops left. The nation's top diplomat said he made it his mission to learn from the mistakes that were made and contended he was leaving the State Department "stronger and better able to respond to crises than it was when we found it." U.S. forces invaded Afghanistan in 2001 following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and the 20-year war, the longest in U.S. history, ultimately left 2,420 American troops dead and more than 20,000 wounded. "I firmly believe the president's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan was the right one," Secretary Blinken said. "American troops are no longer fighting and dying in Afghanistan; the American people are safer and more secure." #antonyblinken #afghanistanwar #cspan
