@missclairebenjamin: 🚨Handling the “self-absorbed” manager 👇 Having a manager who can be disorganised and appears self- absorbed can be infuriating because it often means it’s difficult to get your needs met as the direct report Sometimes this behaviour can stem from a lack of self- awareness, not bad intent. A safe and respectful way to bring it into their awareness is to focus on your different working styles. “I’m conscious you and I have quite different working styles and I’d like to explore how we could work differently with each other so that I feel I can work to my usual high standards. Would you be open to discussing this?” Choose a time to open up a conversation with them and talk to them about how you feel (don’t forget to check it’s also a good time for them- as shown in this video) The important thing is to AVOID criticising them as they will likely become defensive and you’ll get no where. Instead focus on the fact you have different working styles. Before you speak to them make sure to be clear on what you need from them. Focus on what you WANT not what you don’t want.
