The Battle of Kulikovo, fought on September 8, 1380, marking the first major victory for the Russians over the Mongol-Tatar Golden Horde. It took place on the Kulikovo Field, near the Don River, and was primarily a battle between the forces of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, led by Prince Dmitry Ivanovich (later known as Dmitry Donskoy), and a large Tatar-Mongol army under the command of Mamai, a powerful warlord of the Golden Horde. At this point in history, the Russian principalities were fragmented and under the suzerainty of the Mongol-Tatars, who had controlled the region for over a century since the Mongol invasions. Mamai, not a direct descendant of Genghis Khan, was struggling to maintain power within the Horde and saw an opportunity to reassert dominance over the increasingly independent Russian princes. Dmitry Donskoy, determined to resist further Mongol influence, rallied a coalition of Russian principalities, bringing together soldiers from various Russian states, including Moscow and Ryazan. The Russian forces, though not as numerous as the Mongol-Tatars, were highly motivated to defend their lands and reject Mongol rule. The battle itself was fierce and brutal. The Russians formed up on the Kulikovo Field, using the landscape to their advantage. Dmitry cleverly sent a portion of his cavalry to hide in the woods as a reserve force, under the command of a trusted general, Dmitry Bobrok-Volynsky. In the early stages, the Mongol-Tatar forces appeared to be winning, breaking through the Russian lines. However, at a critical moment, Dmitry’s hidden cavalry charged from the woods, catching Mamai’s forces off guard. This sudden assault turned the tide, and the Mongol-Tatar army began to collapse. Mamai’s forces were routed, and many fled, while others were cut down by the Russians. The victory at Kulikovo was significant because it demonstrated that the Mongol-Tatars were not invincible, and it boosted the morale and prestige of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Dmitry Donskoy became a hero of Russian resistance. While the Mongol yoke over Russia wouldn’t end for another century, this battle was a key turning point in the eventual rise of Moscow and the weakening of Mongol influence. In the aftermath, Mamai's defeat weakened his power, and he was soon overthrown by Tokhtamysh, another leader of the Golden Horde, who reasserted control over the region. Despite the Russian victory, they would still pay tribute to the Horde for a time, but Kulikovo laid the groundwork for Russia’s future independence. #history #russia #medievaltiktok #mongolia #christianity #orthodox
