Gonna actually clarify this claim here since it’s not correct: There have only been two black women cast as Elphaba on Broadway OR the west end, but more than two have played the role as understudies.
The First black women to play the role EVER was Saycon Sengbloh. She was a standby which is similar to understudy, but the differences they do not play any additional roles in the ensemble. The only time they perform is when they play Elphaba. Because she was not the “principal” elphaba, she is not considered the first official black Elphaba, unfortunately.
The first official black elphaba was Alexia Khadime who did the role in London in a principal contract.
I apologize that I am not aware of every name of every black woman who has played this role as an understudy or a swing. But there are more than two.

a woman of color just fits the role i feel. i feel like it really shows the discrimination that elphaba felt, because it was just about the color of elphabas skin, never anything else. she killed it

We’ve also only had two black principal Glindas. (On Bway/West End)
Brittney Johnson was not only broadway’s first black principal Glinda but also first woman of color in general to play the role in a principal contract. Lucy St Louis who did the role in London is not only the first black woman to play Glinda in the west end. But she also made history as the first black woman to play Christine in the phantom of the opera. Considering how old both of these shows are it’s a shame these casting achievements have come so late. But I’m so happy to see more diversity in the show.
