This is one of the many ways I’ve supported my autistic daughter’s communication journey at home through play therapy. She was once completely nonverbal. Now she can speak in simple sentences. (It’s important to note that she can only speak in simple sentences with routine activities.) New or limited access experiences are still hard for her to communicate with speech. Speech is only one part of how she expresses herself. She still uses her AAC device, hand leading, pointing, gestures, and other ways to communicate. We honor all of it because every form of communication matters. I’m not a trained therapist, just a mom who took the time to understand her daughter. I learned by observing, researching, asking specialists, and doing the daily work with her at home. Here’s how our play therapy looks: I create a calm, safe space for her to be herself
I follow her lead, without pressure or expectations
We start with parallel play where I mirror her actions and join her world
I use simple language, gestures, and visuals to support communication
I celebrate every sound, gesture, glance, or choice she makes.
And we keep it short, gentle, and joyful, play is never a chore. This approach isn’t about forcing speech. It’s about building connection. Her words came in their own time, alongside the many ways she already communicated. What’s helped me the most is being gentle but consistent, respecting her pace, and finding a way to do this without burning out. I want other parents to know that you don’t need special training to support your child. You can create real progress right at home. #asd #autism #autismawareness #adhd #autismacceptance #specialneeds #autismfamily #autistic #autismspectrum #neurodiversity #autismmom #autismspectrumdisorder #autismlife #autismsupport #MentalHealth #neurodivergent #aspergers #autismlove #autismparents #disability #specialeducation #inclusion #aba #Love #actuallyautistic #autismo #parenting #anxiety #autismcommunity #autismparent
