Do you battle with jaw pain, or TMD, AKA TMJ disorder? This is a complicated problem which must take into account neck dysfunction, TMJ, actual joint dysfunction, muscle function, and clenching emotional stressors, lifestyle, occlusion, even the state of inflammation in our bodies. I try to touch on all of these in my educational videos and in today’s video, I am directly discussing how the neck function and posture can impact it. You see as a rule of thumb the more forward your head is in a bad posture. The more posteriorly or backwards translating pulling forces are on the jaw, which can compress the TMJ, which is the actual joint or cause mechanical dysfunction meaning it doesn’t move the right way. In order to bring our head back, there are many things to look at from the feet up to the neck itself, but one thing is the actual muscles of the neck. The ones on the front and the back work together to pull your neck and head back and to maintain a neutral curve. This video shows a simple superset meaning two exercise exercises completed one after the other, where you can bounce the strength on the front and back of the neck which will reduce compression forces on the TMJ.
