haven't seen it yet but sounds like a missed opportunity, if handled well could've been a way to illustrate elphaba's proximity to privilege while foreclosed to it, something mixed ppl often endure

oh, huh, yeah, I saw it as "Elphaba identifies w/ the talking animals being othered (and is just fundamentally a kind person)" but now that you say it, I could see people interpreting it that way

Watching the movie, that actually never went through my mind.😅 But I definitely see how it can impact the story and Elphaba's motivations.

I wonder if elpheba even KNOWS about dolci bear though. Like she was a baby i doubt she ever asked who her wetnurse was

Great point that I didn't even think about initially. I forgot about Dulci bears existence very quickly

Idk if it’s just me, but i forgot about dulsi bear literally the second after she appeared. She has no impact on the movie and isn’t mentioned outside the throwaway line that she looked after Elphaba

I’d argue it doesn’t, given irl history, particularly in the antebellum and Jim Crow south of white children being raised by black nannies who grew up to be just as racist as everyone else.

People also miss the duli bear was also nessa's nurse and she is apathetic at best to the animals plight. She wasn't othered in the same way and so can't relate.

Wicked is an allegory for race and it took them 20 years to cast a black woman as Elphaba. Do with that what you will

it's just me, dude :
I honestly don't see that as her motivation. she never brings up dulcibear or is shown to remember her much. we just see she has compassion towards suffering animals cause she sees them as equals

Spielberg did exactly the same thing with West Side Story! Tony didn’t empathise with Puerto Ricans because he understood their situation, now it’s because he was friends with a PR woman.

also if thats her motivation for it takes away from act 2 in „🎵no good deed” /one of the more important lessons of ally activism and not overspeaking/overshadowing ppl you want to help 😬😬
