@syracuse.com: A small group of Onondaga Nation citizens recently gathered on the bank of Onondaga Creek near Tully. The gathering was a homecoming more than 200 years in the making: They’d come to talk about the unprecedented return in September of 1,000 acres of land to the Onondaga Nation. One thousand acres is but a sliver of the 2.5 million acres that the Onondaga Nation says was stolen from it in violation of its three treaties with the U.S., including the Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794 signed by George Washington. But just standing on that sliver beneath willow branches waving in the breeze was enough to kindle something in Maureen Lyons’s spirit. “I have freedom in my DNA,” she said. “It’s a huge thing.” Tap the link in our bio to read the full story. 🔑 If you can’t see the complete story, you’ll need to log in or subscribe. 📽️: N.
