Sensory-seeking behaviors before and during sleep, are quite common in babies. A key characteristic of these behaviors is the baby’s desire for sensory stimulation to calm down and fall asleep. Examples include: 🎈 Motor restlessness: The baby may try to sense their body’s boundaries by moving around and flapping their arms and legs. 🎈 High need for movement to sleep (e.g., bouncing in a baby hammock, pram/stroller, or on a Pilates ball). 🎈 High need to be held tightly or wrapped. 🎈 High need for sucking (breastfeeding/pacifier). 🎈 Continuous head movement back and forth. 🎈 Pressing against the sides or head of the bed. 🎈 Sleep difficulties without an obvious cause often have a sensory basis. If neither you nor your baby is bothered by these behaviors, no action is necessary. It’s perfectly normal for babies to want to be held, suck, or need movement to fall asleep. However, if these behaviors challenges your baby’s sleep to the extent that it impacts your family’s well-being, I want you to know that they can often be managed by stimulating the primary senses with simple exercises. I’ve made these evidence-based exercises easily accessible in my international bestselling program, “DeveloBaby - Sleep”. The program includes the best practice sensory-stimulating exercises demonstrated with real babies, as well as many tips for improving baby sleep. Baby sleep can sometimes be complex and there can be several reasons for sleep difficulties. But sensory stimulation is really a very relevant tool towards better baby sleep.
