You’ve probably heard of Project 2025 – either from Democrats warning of its extreme agenda or from the former president Donald Trump claiming it has nothing to do with him and he doesn’t endorse all of its ideas. But what actually is it? The project is an effort by the Heritage Foundation, a prominent rightwing thinktank, to dismantle features of the government it believes conflict with conservative ideology and to install extreme, rightwing policies in a potential second Trump term and beyond, says the Guardian US democracy reporter and Project 2025 expert Rachel Leingang. The backlash to the controversial rightwing manifesto, designed to influence a conservative president, has been so strong that its director, Paul Dans, recently stepped down from the role. But, says Leingang, the ideas aren’t going away.
